August 20-24 - Mitch Iburg & Zoë Powell of Studio Alluvium: Introduction to Local Materials
Mitch Iburg and Zoë Powell are ceramic artists who have dedicated their careers to working with locally sourced clay and mineral resources. They each produce a wide range of work, from functional tea and sake ware to expressive vessels and sculptural objects. In all their work, they share a general ethos of experimentation and collaboration with the natural world. In 2018, Mitch and Zoë founded Studio Alluvium, a ceramics studio based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This space enables them to share their research with the world through teaching in-person and online workshops. Their mission is to continue sharing their values of sustainability, experiential learning, and curiosity for the Earth and its resources.
Join instructors Mitch Iburg and Zoë Powell at the Oki Doki Studio in Germantown, NY to learn the foundations of working with local clays and minerals in the ceramics studio. This 4.5-day workshop will provide guidelines on identifying, foraging, processing, and testing various materials collected from Upstate New York. Participants will learn how to use these resources to develop clay bodies, slips, and glazes. Each workshop participant will make at least 3 different material tests, plus several small objects. Student work will be fired to cone 6-8 in reduction.
All topics discussed in this workshop will easily translate to anyone’s home studio practice. Participants will be able to use this information to locate and test their own materials at home. All registrants will receive a digital copy of the Studio Alluvium Workbook outlining useful geologic information, clay harvesting resources, and testing procedures. This workshop has a maximum number of 12 participants.
Students should bring:
notebook + printed copy of “workbook”
camera (optional)
