August 7-10th and 14th. Andrew Sartorius: Ash, Dust, and Flow - Exploring Glazes in the Train Kiln.
“Sometimes more is more, and more is good. . . right? The labor intensive process of wood firing lends itself to creating deep, layered, surfaces that give vitality to the wild clays I use. The kiln is my collaborator, a trusted but pleasantly unpredictable partner lending its voice to mine for moments of dynamic creation. I’m very interested in the movement of glaze over form, and pushing that concept with an intuitive spirit of play.” - Andrew Sartorius
This 5 day workshop is led by Andrew Sartorius is the Program Manager here at The Oki Doki Studio, and is suitable for total beginner wood firers to intermediate and advanced participants. This workshop will focus on layering glazes, creative loading strategies, and charging pots dry applications of powdered wood ash and glazes to encourage results with moments of fluidity, flow, and drippy ash.
Each participant should prepare and bring a variety of pots adding up to 2 -2.5 cubic feet of bisque fired cone 10 work. We also encourage students to bring a few extra “stuffer” pieces that are approximately 2x2x2. These are not priority pieces, but are easy to use to fill gaps in the kiln, and can be added if there is extra space. After registration participants will receive an email with a list of cone 10 clays and any extra information on the workshop.
